If I Could Live One Night Again

Bengaluru FC vs Johor Darul Ta'zim | AFC Cup Semi-Final, 19 October 2016 Some nights are remembered. Some nights are celebrated. And then there are nights that become a part of who you are.
19 October 2016. Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Bengaluru. I had recently returned from Germany, and it had been almost a year since I last watched my beloved Bengaluru FC play at the Fortress. A year away from the familiar chants, the familiar faces, the madness of West Block, and that indescribable feeling of walking into Kanteerava on a matchday. I had missed it all. And what a game to return to!
There was a new chapter unfolding at Bengaluru FC. Albert Roca had taken over from Ashley Westwood, the man who had built the club's winning identity and delivered two I-League titles and a Federation Cup. Westwood had set the bar incredibly high, and Roca had some enormous shoes to fill. There was also the arrival of Álvaro Rubio, the experienced Spanish midfielder whose time at BFC would be brief but impactful. It was a period of transition, with fresh ideas, new faces, and the same old ambition. And now, we were facing the mighty Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT), the defending AFC Cup champions, in the second leg of the AFC Cup semi-final. We had returned from Malaysia with a crucial away goal and a 1–1 draw. The tie was delicately poised, but there was something in the air that evening. A sense of anticipation, perhaps even destiny. For me, though, the evening began long before the referee's whistle. Outside the stadium, it was reunion time. Friends from West Block whom I hadn't seen in nearly a year, familiar faces, hugs, laughter, conversations, and the kind of camaraderie that makes football so much more than ninety minutes on a pitch. I was so caught up in meeting everyone that I almost forgot there was a rather important football match waiting to happen! By the time I finally entered the stadium, about thirty minutes before kick-off, the usual central section of West Block, where I would normally stand, was already packed to the rafters. There wasn't an inch to spare. I found myself a little further to the right. Different spot. Same family. Same madness.
And then it began. Kanteerava was absolutely electric. West Block was in full voice, the chants reverberating around the stadium, thousands of hearts beating for one badge. It was the kind of atmosphere that makes the hair on your arms stand up even before a ball is kicked. But football, as always, had its own script. JDT struck early. For a moment, the visitors had reminded us exactly why they were the defending champions. But what followed was, to this day, one of the finest displays of football I have witnessed from Bengaluru FC. The boys responded with a masterclass. The passing, the movement, the pressing, the hunger - everything seemed to click. We weren't merely trying to get back into the game. We were taking it to one of Asia's best. And just before half-time, our captain rose. Sunil Chhetri- A header - A goal - A belief. The equaliser didn't just bring us level. It made us believe a little more strongly that something extraordinary was unfolding before our eyes.
Half-time arrived, and West Block desperately needed a water break. Our vocal cords had already worked harder than most of us would at the office in an entire week! It was during this brief respite that I noticed something that has stayed with me ever since. Mr. Parth Jindal, our bossman, was bringing a guest into the West Block stand, seemingly explaining the passion, the atmosphere, and what this club meant to its supporters. I remember watching that moment with immense pride. Here was an owner who didn't merely invest in a football club. He seemed to genuinely understand what it meant to the people who loved it. Someone who shared the passion, the excitement, and the dream. In that moment, it felt like we were all part of the same family, from the stands to the boardroom.
The second half began, and Bengaluru continued to push. Chance after chance, wave after wave. Every attack carried hope, every missed opportunity brought a collective groan, and every chant grew louder. And then came the 67th minute. Sunil Chhetriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii. ದೇವತಾ ಮನುಷ್ಯ…..Our Captain- Leader -Legend. The man who had given us so many reasons to celebrate. He produced a goal that could have stunned even the gods of football. A moment of sheer audacity. A strike so magnificent that, for a split second, it felt as though time itself had stopped to admire it. And then Kanteerava erupted. Not merely a roar, but something primal. As though the concrete beneath our feet had come alive, as though every voice in that stadium had merged into one thunderous cry that could have been heard across Bengaluru …….. Kengeri to KR Pura – Yelachenahalli to Yelahanka. Strangers embraced. Friends screamed into each other's faces. Arms flew into the air. Somewhere in that chaos, ninety minutes of football ceased to matter, and all that existed was pure, unfiltered joy. I have witnessed many goals in my life. But very few moments have made me feel so completely alive. And we weren't done yet. Juanan rose to meet the ball and delivered a glorious header, the icing on a cake that had already tasted sweeter than anything we could have imagined. 3–1. Bengaluru FC were going to the AFC Cup Final. The first Indian club to achieve that feat. History had been written. And we were there, inside the Fortress, singing ourselves hoarse as it happened.
Even ten years later, I struggle to find words that can do justice to what that night meant to me. Because my relationship with Bengaluru FC was never merely about victories, trophies, or results. The heartbreak of 2014 had made me fall in love with this club. It taught me that loving a football club meant embracing its pain as much as its joy. That the badge mattered even when the result didn't go our way. But 19 October 2016 was different. If 2014 made me fall in love with Bengaluru FC, that magical night in 2016 made the love eternal. It sealed a bond not just for this lifetime, but for seven lifetimes to come. Ten years have passed. Players have come and gone. Seasons have brought joy, frustration, hope, and heartbreak. Life itself has changed in more ways than I could have imagined. But whenever I close my eyes and think of that night, I am right there again. A little to the right of my usual spot in West Block. Surrounded by my friends. My voice nearly gone. My heart racing. Watching Chhetri unleash that moment of magic as Kanteerava erupts around me. Some nights never leave you. And perhaps, even in our graves, we'll still be reliving that one. This is my club. This is my family. This is Bengaluru FC. Always. 💙
